Goodbye 2024-2025: What Teachers Wish Parents Knew
Goodbye to the 2024-2025 school year, welcome summer! As we wrap up the 2024-2025 school year, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the challenges and successes we've all experienced, especially when supporting children on the autism spectrum. Whether you’re a parent navigating IEP meetings for the first time, or a it feels like your millionth IEP striving to meet every child’s unique needs, this year has been a journey.
Over my years as an educator and autism expert, one thing has become clear: there’s so much goodwill on both sides, but sometimes important things get lost in translation. Here are some honest insights from a teacher:
What Teachers Wish Parents Knew
1. We Want to Partner, Not Police
Teachers aren’t here to judge your parenting. We want to work with you to support your child’s growth and happiness. Your insights about your child are invaluable to us.
2. Progress Looks Different for Every Child
Growth isn’t always linear or dramatic. Sometimes it’s small victories — like a child sitting through a lesson, or using a new communication tool. Celebrate every win.
3. We’re Stretched Thin, but We Care Deeply
Classrooms are busy places with many demands. While we’d love to do more, limited time and resources mean we appreciate clear communication and realistic expectations.
Now tell me. What do you wish teachers knew? Let’s build stronger partnerships today.
